Evidence for Global Management of Newborn Infections for WHO Guidelines Development Group published in Pediatrics

Work led by Global AIM provides key evidence for WHO guidelines on managing serious bacterial infections in young infants. Commissioned by the WHO Newborn Health Unit, the work addresses critical gaps in clinical knowledge.

Our recent work at the Global AIM Lab was published as a supplement to Pediatrics entitled “Evidence for Global Management of Serious Bacterial Infections in Young Infants Aged 0-59 Days” in August 2024. The review was commissioned by the World Health Organization (WHO) Newborn Health Unit and contributed evidence towards their new guidelines on the management of infections in young infants which will be released in October. The supplement includes systematic reviews and meta-analyses on diagnostic algorithms, antibiotic regimens, and the predictive accuracy of clinical signs for conditions such as sepsis, pneumonia, meningitis, and all-cause mortality. The reviews address key evidence gaps in this clinical area. By contributing to the new WHO guidelines, these studies will inform research priorities, implementation considerations, and development of policies and programs to improve the care of infants with serious bacterial infections globally.
