The work was entitled 'Diagnostic accuracy of tachypnoea for predicting mortality and identifying sepsis in young infants aged 0–59 days: a systematic review and meta-analysis,' The review was part of a project funded by the World Health Organization (WHO) about management of serious bacterial infections in young infants. The review was led by Suci Ardini Widyaningsih, MD, MMSc, as her thesis project while completing her Master of Medical Sciences in Clinical Investigation at Harvard Medical School, under the mentorship of Dr. Anne CC Lee.
The review investigated tachypnea (fast breathing), which is commonly used as a danger sign for predicting mortality and identifying sepsis, yet its diagnostic and predictive accuracy in young infants aged 0-59 days had not previously been quantified. Assessing the accuracy of tachypnea matters for evaluating the validity of the clinical algorithms to identify infants at high risk of adverse outcomes. Identifying infants at highest risk allows healthcare providers to prioritize infants who need urgent care.
